Bromley builder offers advice to Government in Parliamentary Review report

22 August 2018

The Managing Director of a Bromley-based building services firm has contributed to the Parliamentary Review of the construction sector, in a new report published in autumn.

Lee Summers, owner of Oakmore Builders, is to be featured in the report – an annual publication, which combines political insight and industry expertise to highlight best practice across multiple sectors.

In his contribution Mr Summers is positive about the construction industry but urges the Government to tackle the legal position of staff in sub-contracting firms, to ensure that there is clarity on issues such as holiday pay and pensions. He also wants to see more firms making binding commitments to best practice in terms of site safety, cash flow management, client communication, staff time keeping and presentation.

In an extract from his evidence to the report Mr Summers says: “A source of irritation for me is the grey area in which subcontractors are situated. Laws relating to holiday pay and pensions do not clearly pertain to subcontractors, leading to confusion as to what exactly is required by subcontractors (of whom there are many in our sector). Employers therefore have to sometimes deal with costly disputes; in some cases this can take the form of court proceedings. The solution, as far as I see it, should be much clearer legal definitions, such that no one is confused by these grey areas.”

Mr Summers was invited to offer his professional insight into the construction industry by Sir Eric Pickles, who co-chairs the Parliamentary Review with Lord David Blunkett.

Established in 2015, Oakmore Builders has grown to become a leading building company throughout Bromley and across South East London, and is set to achieve its first £1m turnover in the current financial year.

Lee, who possesses more than 30 years’ experience in the construction industry, started out as an apprentice at 15, after leaving school. Since then he has grown to become an international entrepreneur, operating property businesses in the UK and Thailand.

Oakmore specialises in home extension projects, luxury kitchens and bathrooms, as well as all major building services.

Lee Summers, Managing Director of Oakmore Builders, said: “I have come a long way in the construction industry, having started out as an apprentice before taking the plunge into business to establish Oakmore as a respectable and professional company. Contributing to this important report is a great honour.”

He added: “With more than 30 years’ industry experience, I hope my insights will be of great use to the Government and in shaping the report. It will be exciting to share my own entrepreneurial experiences with senior politicians, and I am looking forward to championing the industry, which I am so passionate about, even more.”
